About
Some people can find therapy that works for them. They can afford it. It improves their lives. That’s great!
There’s an increasing number of people who can’t say that.
And that’s where It’s Not Therapy comes in.
What is It’s Not Therapy ?
It’s Not Therapy is just what it sounds like – emotional health tools and advice from people who have been through the mental health system. Basically, if therapy is medicine, It’s Not Therapy is emotional nutrition.
It’s Not Therapy is ideal for those who have plateaued in therapy, or who had bad experiences with therapy. It is not a substitute for therapy, nor is it “better” than traditional methods. It’s a response to the fact that different things work for different people.
You may find benefits here if you:
- can’t afford conventional therapy
- don’t have access to the right kind of therapy
- have trouble understanding the tools you’re getting in therapy
- have a specific problem that needs a solution
- are stuck, or plateaued, in your healing
- feel punished or too normalized in therapy
- find the therapy process too slow, vague, or confusing
- want additional supports between therapy sessions
- want to connect with other people who have been through what you’re going through.
- afraid to go to therapy, not sure it’s right for you, or don’t know which kind of therapy to try.
About Liana
Founder Liana Kerzner was a peer counsellor as a teenager, but found a new passion for the technique as an adult. Working in the video game industry, she learned about the unique challenges facing people with autism, ADHD, OCD, and other such conditions. She also had to learn about the barriers and gaps in the system first hand, overcoming PTSD in 2013.
Through her own experiences in the mental health system, Liana discovered many gaps, weaknesses, and limitations, and set out to create solutions.
She started doing weekly mental health videos that she called “Wellness Wednesday”, as an offshoot of her video game content.
Her weekly Twitch streams started feeling like group therapy sessions. which gave her the idea that people really needed to talk. So she started doing affordable one-on-one coaching sessions with people.
Liana found that she was repeating herself a lot about things like boundaries, self compassion, and effective listening. This was the origin of Liana’s Top Ten Phrases. Now what if it was possible to distribute these concepts in a more mass media format?
She pitched the It’s Not Therapy concept to Sauga960 AM – a radio station in Mississauga. That led to the realization that there needed to be a middle ground between the mass media of radio shows and podcasts, and one-on-one work.
And so we have this website.
Liana is available for private and group talks, event speaking, facilitation services, and team building activities. Please reach out using our contact form below
